Things to do in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

Built on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle has towered over the city since the 11th century. Its initial use as a royal residence declined in the 15th century, and was used as a military garrison from the 17th century onwards. Nowadays, Edinburgh Castle is one of the best known tourist attractions Scotland has to offer. If you have the time, stay for the one o’clock gun fired from Mill’s Mount Battery!
Entry Fee: ca. £20.00

Royal Mile & Victoria Street

The Royal Mile and Victoria Street are two winding streets located in Edinburgh’s old town, which gained UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1995. Often rumored to be the real life inspiration behind Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, both offer a great assortment of small stores, coffee shops, and pubs.

Arthur’s Seat and Holyrood Park

Amidst Holyrood Park lies Arthur’s Seat. This ancient volcano is only a short walk from Edinburgh City Centre and offers stunning views over the city and the surrounding nature. The climb takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the route and level of fitness.

National Museum of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland is home to thousands of artifacts and objects. Split up in different galleries, visitors can explore Science and Technology as well as Scottish History and Archaeology, or take a stroll through the Grand Gallery.
Free Entry

Lauriston Castle

Approximately 40 minutes outside of Edinburgh lies Lauriston Castle. Surrounded by its extensive gardens, Lauriston Castle used to be a private residence but has since been bequeathed to the city to show the home of a middle-class family at the beginning of the 20th century.
The grounds are free of admission, the castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
