ECAS cordially invites you to the first of many editions of the Joint Seminar Series between Leuphana’s Faculty of Education and Glasgow’s School of Education. The seminar takes place on
Wednesday, 27 October 2021
3 pm – 4:30 pm GMT / 4 pm – 5:30 pm CET via Zoom
Prof. Stephen McKinney PhD (University of Glasgow) and Prof. Dr. Lars Alberth (Leuphana University Lüneburg) will talk about social inequities and social inequalities experienced during childhood.
First, they will look at economic hardships – poverty – and their severe consequences for the life of children: their access to social infrastructures of education and health services, and their participation in social contexts before and during the ongoing pandemic. In this way, childhood becomes visible as a focal point of wider social inequities. Second, they will look at childhood as a social position of generational inequalities per se, their unequal access to rights, resources and obligations compared to adults. Drawing on the institutional responses to victimization, childhood can be analyzed as a life phase riddled with inequities. Routes of establishing social equity will be discussed.
