Emma Thomson

Prof. Emma Thomson is a Clinical Professor of Infectious Diseases and Director of the MRC – University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. Her research focus is on emerging viral infections, which are a continuing health threat, and she has investigated a number of emerging viruses that have been detected in recent years in the Scottish population, including SARS-CoV-2, AAV2 and Ebola virus. Prof Thomson has strong links with Uganda, working closely with the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) to improve local capacity for surveillance and diagnostics. She is now working in partnership with UVRI to establish a pioneering research initiative investigating the ecology and transmission of Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever virus in Uganda, aiming to tackle the high health burden and contribute to capacity building within Uganda’s scientific and public health communities.
