The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) together with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), have announced a new call for proposals for international and high-impact bilateral research in the arts and humanities sector. It supports cutting-edge, cross-border research deepening the understanding of human culture, history, and society.
Researchers from Germany and the UK are invited to submit joint proposals focusing on the creation of new knowledge that critically addresses global issues through innovative and interdisciplinary methods.
Key Areas of Focus and Objectives
The focus of the current call is on interdisciplinary research that explores the intersection of culture, society, and global challenges, with an emphasis on pressing issues such as:
- Cultural heritage and preservation
- Migration and transnationalism
- Digital humanities and technological innovation in the study of the past
- The role of the humanities in addressing climate change
- Post-colonial studies and global justice
The DFG and AHRC aim to foster a holistic approach to these issues by supporting projects that draw on the strengths of both UK and German academic traditions. Both organizations are particularly keen to encourage projects that engage with global or historical questions from innovative perspectives, utilizing digital tools and methods where relevant.
Funding and Eligibility
Successful proposals will receive substantial support for their implementation, with particular emphasis on fostering international cooperation and partnerships. They must demonstrate scientific excellence and a commitment to the production of new knowledge that transcends academic boundaries.
Proposals may request support for a range of activities, including:
- Collaborative research projects
- Workshops and symposia
- Exchange programs for early-career researchers
- Joint publications and digital archives
Projects are expected to run for up to three years, and successful applicants will receive funding to cover salaries, research costs, travel, and the organization of academic events. Both institutions are particularly committed to fostering collaboration between early-career researchers and established academics, creating opportunities for mentorship and professional development.
Funding may be up to £420,000 for the UK component, with AHRC contributing 80% of FEC. The DFG part of the funding will be financed through its individual research grant programme. Project Duration & Start Date
The projects are expected to start in early 2026 and not extend beyond three years.
